Almanac Planting Co is a family-run plant nursery located just outside Knox, Pennsylvania in the heart of the PA Wilds. We specialize in cold-hardy fruit trees, berry plants, flowering shrubs, and perennials that perform well across western Pennsylvania's USDA Zones 5b through 7a.

We ship plants nationwide, but for gardeners across the region, we also offer farm pickup with 20% off our online prices. Customers regularly make the drive from communities throughout Pittsburgh, Erie, Butler, Franklin, and Clarion to pick up fruit trees, berry plants, and landscape shrubs directly from our farm.

What Grows Well in Western Pennsylvania

Western Pennsylvania spans several USDA hardiness zones — from 5b in the higher-elevation northern counties to 7a along the Lake Erie shore and in sheltered river valleys near Pittsburgh. Most of the region, including Clarion, Butler, Venango, and Crawford counties, falls in Zone 6a, with average winter lows between -10°F and -5°F.

That range creates excellent conditions for cold-hardy fruit production. Apple and pear trees are a natural fit, and many berry plants — including blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries — thrive in the region's acidic soils and four-season climate. Gardeners establishing edible landscapes, backyard orchards, or perennial borders will find that the growing season across western PA (typically mid-May through mid-October) offers plenty of time for most hardy varieties to establish and produce.

We focus on varieties selected for performance in northern growing zones, so what we carry is specifically suited to the conditions our western PA customers are gardening in.

Farm Pickup Near Knox, Pennsylvania

Customers who pick up plants directly from our farm receive 20% off our online prices. Our online prices include specialized packaging materials and labor required to safely ship live plants across the country. When you pick up at the farm, those costs are avoided — and we pass the savings along through a pickup discount.

Erie — approximately 90 minutes

Local pickup orders require a $50 minimum purchase and must be scheduled in advance. Our farm is an active working nursery, so all pickups are by appointment only.

How to Place a Pickup Order

To request a pickup order, contact us and include the plants you'd like to purchase, the container or plant size if applicable, and the quantity of each. We'll review availability and send a draft invoice reflecting the 20% farm pickup discount. After the invoice is approved and paid, we'll schedule a pickup time that works for you.
