Growing Conditions in Mercer County

Mercer County sits primarily in USDA Zones 6a and 6b, with average winter lows between -10°F and 0°F. The western part of the county near Hermitage and Sharon can pick up some lake-effect influence from the Shenango River Valley, while the higher ground around Grove City and Mercer tends to run slightly cooler.

The region's clay-loam soils hold moisture well, which is great for fruit trees and shrubs but can mean drainage matters for berry plants — raised beds or amended soil help blueberries thrive here. The growing season averages about 155–165 frost-free days, with a last frost date in mid-May and first fall frost typically arriving in early-to-mid October.

We grow and source our plants in the same climate our Mercer County customers are gardening in. Browse our Zone 6 collection to see the full range of what performs well here.

Popular Plants for Hermitage & Grove City Gardens

Mercer County customers lean heavily toward fruit trees — apples and pears are the top sellers, with cherry and plum trees gaining ground. Berry plants are popular across both the suburban properties in Hermitage and Sharon and the more rural lots around Grove City and Mercer. For landscape work, privacy hedges and arborvitaes move fast, especially in newer subdivisions.

Deer-resistant varieties are a smart pick across the county — browsing pressure is real, particularly east of I-79. And for gardeners looking to add year-round structure, our evergreen collection and native plant selections are solid choices for Mercer County conditions.

Why Buy From a Local Grower?

Big-box stores ship plants from centralized distribution centers hundreds of miles away — often from warmer climates. Those plants haven't experienced a western PA winter, and it shows. We grow and source our stock in the same climate you're gardening in, so every plant we sell is already adapted to the cold winters, clay-heavy soils, and variable growing seasons of this region.

We also stand behind what we sell. Our Grow Happy™ Guarantee means that if something doesn't make it, we'll work with you to make it right. And because we're a small operation — not a garden center with thousands of SKUs — we can actually talk to you about what works in your specific yard.
