What Grows Well in Central Pennsylvania
Central Pennsylvania's Ridge and Valley terrain creates a patchwork of microclimates — sheltered valleys that warm earlier in spring, exposed ridgelines that stay cooler, and everything in between. Most of the region falls in USDA Zone 6a to 6b, with average winter lows between -10°F and 0°F. Higher elevations in the Allegheny Plateau (around Clearfield and DuBois) trend toward the cooler end, while the valleys near State College and Altoona are slightly warmer.
The growing season across central PA runs roughly from mid-May through early October — around 150 to 170 frost-free days depending on elevation. Late spring frosts are more common here than in the lower-lying western or southeastern parts of the state, which makes selecting cold-hardy varieties especially important for fruit trees and early-blooming plants.
We carry varieties selected specifically for performance in Zones 5 through 7, so what we stock is suited to the conditions central PA gardeners are actually working with.
