Plants for Sale in Central Pennsylvania

Central Pennsylvania's Ridge and Valley terrain creates a patchwork of microclimates — sheltered valleys that warm earlier in spring, exposed ridgelines that stay cooler, and everything in between. Most of the region falls in USDA Zone 6a to 6b, with average winter lows between -10°F and 0°F. Higher elevations on the Allegheny Plateau (around DuBois and Clearfield) trend toward the cooler end, while the valleys near State College and Altoona are slightly warmer.

The growing season across central PA runs roughly from mid-May through early October — around 150 to 170 frost-free days depending on elevation. Late spring frosts are more common here than in the lower-lying western or southeastern parts of the state, which makes selecting cold-hardy varieties especially important for fruit trees and early-blooming plants.

Fruit trees lead the way across the region — the Nittany Valley's orchard heritage means backyard fruit planting is deeply rooted here. Berry plants are a close second, with blueberries thriving on the plateau's acidic soils and raspberries performing well in the valley's richer ground. Privacy hedges and evergreen windbreaks are popular for the region's exposed rural properties.

Deer-resistant varieties are essential across central PA — browsing pressure is heavy throughout the Ridge and Valley. And our native plant selections are a natural fit for woodland edges, meadow borders, and the diverse soil types found across the region.

Big-box stores ship plants from centralized distribution centers hundreds of miles away — often from warmer climates. Those plants haven't experienced a central PA winter on the Allegheny Plateau or in the Ridge and Valley, and it shows. We grow and source our stock in the same climate you're gardening in, so every plant we sell is already adapted to the cold winters, frost pockets, and variable soils of this region.

Customers who pick up plants at our farm receive at least 20% off our online prices. Our nursery near Knox is accessible via I-80, which puts us within a reasonable drive for many communities across the region:

• Clearfield — approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour via I-80
• State College / Bellefonte — approximately 90 minutes via I-80 and Route 322
• Altoona / Hollidaysburg — approximately 2 hours via I-80 and Route 220

Local pickup orders require a $50 minimum purchase and must be scheduled in advance. On select weekends, we may open the farm for pickup with no minimum — follow us on social media for announcements. All pickups are by appointment only.
