Growing Conditions Around Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh metro area falls primarily in USDA Zones 6b to 7a, with average winter lows between -5°F and 5°F. The city's river valleys and urban heat island effect push some neighborhoods into warmer microclimates, while surrounding suburban and rural areas — particularly north toward Butler and Cranberry — trend slightly cooler toward Zone 6a.

Pittsburgh's warm, humid summers, moderate growing season (typically late April through mid-October), and well-drained hillside soils create strong conditions for fruit trees, berry plants, and flowering shrubs. The region's rolling terrain also means exposure and drainage vary significantly from yard to yard — south-facing slopes warm earlier in spring, while north-facing hillsides stay cooler and retain moisture longer.

We carry varieties selected for performance in Zones 5 through 7, so the plants we stock are well suited for gardens throughout the Pittsburgh metro. Browse our Zone 6 and Zone 7 collections to see what works in your area.

Popular Plants for Pittsburgh-Area Gardens

Many Pittsburgh-area customers visit us when starting fruit and berry plantings. Apple trees, pear trees, blueberry bushes, and raspberry plants are among the most popular choices — all well adapted to the region's climate. We also carry roses, flowering shrubs, and hardy perennials for seasonal color.

Homeowners in the Cranberry, Wexford, and Mt. Lebanon areas often purchase privacy plants and arborvitaes for newer residential landscapes. For gardeners looking to go beyond the basics, our native pollinator-friendly selections and deer-resistant varieties are strong performers in the suburban and semi-rural properties ringing the city.

Why Buy From a Local Grower?

Big-box stores ship plants from centralized distribution centers hundreds of miles away — often from warmer climates. Those plants haven't experienced a western PA winter, and it shows. We grow and source our stock in the same climate you're gardening in, so every plant we sell is already adapted to the cold winters and variable conditions of the greater Pittsburgh region.

We also stand behind what we sell. Our Grow Happy™ Guarantee means that if something doesn't make it, we'll work with you to make it right. And because we're a small operation — not a garden center with thousands of SKUs — we can actually talk to you about what works in your specific yard.
