Coneflower FAQs & Care

What are coneflowers?

Coneflowers (Echinacea) are native North American perennials known for daisy-like flowers with a raised central cone. The classic purple coneflower has been joined by selections in orange, red, yellow, white, pink, and green, many with sturdier stems and longer bloom.

They flower from early summer into fall and are one of the most dependable perennials for sunny gardens.

How much sun do coneflowers need?

Coneflowers bloom best in full sun, with at least six hours of direct light. They tolerate light shade but will flower less and may flop.

Average to lean, well-draining soil is ideal. Rich soil and heavy watering produce soft growth and shorter-lived plants.

Are coneflowers drought-tolerant?

Once established, coneflowers are quite drought-tolerant thanks to deep roots. Water regularly in the first season, then only during long dry spells.

Good drainage, especially in winter, matters more than extra water. Wet winter soil is the most common cause of loss.

Should I deadhead coneflowers?

Deadheading spent flowers through midsummer encourages more blooms and keeps plants tidy. Toward the end of the season, leaving the seed heads standing feeds goldfinches and adds winter interest.

Cut stems back to the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.

Do coneflowers attract pollinators?

Coneflowers are among the best perennials for bees and butterflies, and their seed heads draw songbirds in fall and winter. Single-flowered varieties offer the most accessible nectar and pollen.

Planting several together in a sunny spot creates a strong pollinator draw from summer through fall.

Are coneflowers deer-resistant?

Coneflowers are generally rated as deer-resistant. Their rough leaves and prickly cones make them unappealing, though deer may sample new growth in spring.

Rabbits can nibble young plants, so protecting new transplants for the first few weeks is a good idea.
