Summary
A low mound that disappears under a blanket of white stars every spring.
Deutzia is an old-fashioned flowering shrub, but most types grow tall and leggy. Yuki Snowflake® brings the flowers down to the front of the border. It forms a low, mounding plant only one to two feet tall and a little wider, with fine, graceful stems.
In spring, small, pure white, star-shaped flowers open all along those stems, so thickly that the foliage nearly vanishes beneath them. The show lands after the earliest spring shrubs and before most perennials hit their stride, filling a gap in the season.
Through summer the plant settles into a neat green mound that knits easily with perennials and other low shrubs. In fall, the leaves turn shades of burgundy, giving it a second season of color before they drop.
Use it to edge a walk, fill in among taller shrubs in a foundation bed, cover a gentle slope in a mass planting, or soften the edge of a container.
Care
Yuki Snowflake® Deutzia Care
Plant in full sun to partial shade. More sun brings heavier bloom and stronger fall color, but it flowers reliably with a half day of sun.
Deutzia adapts to most average garden soils as long as they drain well. It does not like ground that stays soggy.
Water deeply once or twice a week through the first growing season. Established plants need extra water only during extended dry spells. A light layer of mulch helps keep the root zone even.
Feed once in early spring with a slow release fertilizer.
Deutzia blooms on the previous year's growth, so do any trimming right after the flowers fade. Because it stays so low, most years it needs no more than a light tidy-up and removal of any winter-damaged tips.
Growing in Containers
Its low, spilling habit works well in containers, either alone or along the edge of a mixed planting. Use a pot with drainage holes and a quality potting mix, and water when the top inch of soil is dry, which may be daily in summer. Feed lightly in spring, since frequent watering washes nutrients from the mix. Roots in containers experience greater cold exposure than roots in the ground. Plants hardy in the ground may require winter protection when grown in containers in colder zones.

Additional Information
What is the botanical name of Yuki Snowflake® Deutzia?
The botanical name is Deutzia Yuki Snowflake® ‘NCDX1’. It is a Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrub selected for a low habit and heavy spring bloom.
Can it be used as a groundcover?
Yes, in the sense of a low, flowering shrub planted in groups. Set plants about 18 to 24 inches apart and they knit together into a continuous low mound that shades out weeds and covers gentle slopes. It does not root along the ground like a creeping groundcover. Browse more Groundcovers.
How is it different from other Yuki deutzias?
The Yuki series shares the same low, mounding habit. Yuki Snowflake® has pure white flowers, while Yuki Cherry Blossom® has soft pink blooms. Choose by flower color; size and care are similar.
Will it bloom in partial shade?
Yes. It flowers well with about four to six hours of sun, and the white blooms show up especially clearly in lightly shaded spots. In deeper shade, flowering is lighter and fall color is less intense. For more flowering shrubs, see our Shrubs & Bushes.
