Summary
A tidy little mound that turns pink and white every spring, no shears required.
Yuki Kabuki® belongs to the Yuki series of compact deutzias, selected to stay small and shapely without regular pruning. In spring it disappears under tiny flowers in a mix of pink and white, so many that the leaves are hard to see while it is in bloom.
Once the flowers finish, it settles into a dense, rounded mound of small green leaves, about two and a half to four feet tall and wide. That shape holds on its own through the season, which makes it a natural choice for a low hedge, a repeated accent along a border, or a patio container.
Fall brings a second show as the foliage turns deep burgundy. Deer rarely browse deutzia, and it grows in either full sun or partial shade.
Care
Yuki Kabuki® Deutzia Care
Plant in full sun to partial shade. Full sun gives the heaviest bloom and richest fall color; in partial shade it still flowers well.
Any average, well-drained garden soil suits it. Avoid sites where water stands after rain, since deutzia does not like soggy roots.
Water deeply once or twice a week through the first growing season while roots establish. Established plants need water during extended dry spells, and a layer of mulch helps hold moisture through summer.
Feeding needs are light. One application of a slow release fertilizer in early spring is plenty.
Its compact habit means pruning is optional. If you want to shape it, trim right after flowering, since it blooms on the previous year's growth. Snip out any stem tips damaged over winter in spring.
Growing in Containers
Its small, rounded form suits a large patio pot. Use a container with open drainage holes and a quality potting mix. Container plants dry out faster than plants in the ground, so check moisture often in warm weather, and feed lightly each spring, since frequent watering washes nutrients from the mix. Roots in containers experience greater cold exposure than roots in the ground. Plants hardy in the ground may require winter protection when grown in containers in colder zones.
