Summary
A low pink cloud of spring flowers for the very front of the garden.
Deutzias have long been grown for their generous spring bloom, but many get large and twiggy. The Yuki series was bred to stay small, and Yuki Cherry Blossom® keeps to a low, spreading mound just one to two feet tall. In mid to late spring the whole plant disappears under clusters of small, pink, bell-shaped flowers, a soft color that sits easily beside both bold and pastel spring bulbs and perennials.
That size lets it work like a flowering groundcover. Plant a group along the front of a sunny border, edge a walkway, or cover a bank that is awkward to mow. After bloom, the fine, dark green foliage stays neat through summer and turns burgundy-purple in fall.
Deer tend to pass deutzia by, so it is a good choice for exposed beds where browsing is a problem. It also suits large containers, where the flowers spill over the rim at eye level.
Care
Yuki Cherry Blossom® Deutzia Care
Plant in full sun to partial shade. Full sun produces the heaviest flowering and the best fall color.
Deutzia grows in most average, well-drained garden soils and is not fussy about pH. Avoid spots where water stands after rain.
Water deeply once or twice a week through the first growing season while roots establish. Established plants tolerate short dry spells but bloom best with regular moisture. A two-inch layer of mulch helps.
Feeding needs are light. One application of a slow release fertilizer in early spring is plenty.
Deutzia blooms on the previous year’s growth, so do any trimming right after the flowers fade. In most years it needs nothing more than the removal of a few dead or crossing stems.
Growing in Containers
Its low, mounding habit suits a wide container or a mixed planter. Use a pot with open drainage and a quality potting mix. Container plants dry out faster than plants in the ground, so check moisture often during warm weather, and feed lightly each spring, since frequent watering washes nutrients out of the mix. Roots in containers experience greater cold exposure than roots in the ground. Plants hardy in the ground may require winter protection when grown in containers in colder zones.

Additional Information
What is the botanical name of Yuki Cherry Blossom® Deutzia?
The botanical name is Deutzia Yuki Cherry Blossom® ‘NCDX2’. It is a Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrub selected for its compact habit and pink flowers.
Can it be used as a groundcover?
Yes. Planted in groups, it forms a low, flowering mat that covers sunny slopes, bed edges, and spots where grass is hard to maintain. It is woody, so it holds its shape in winter rather than dying back to the ground. Browse more Groundcovers.
Is deutzia deer resistant?
Deer usually leave deutzia alone, which makes it a reliable choice for beds near woods or open lawn. No plant is completely deer proof when food is scarce. See more Deer-Resistant Shrubs and Evergreens.
How is it different from Yuki Snowflake® Deutzia?
The two are from the same compact series and share a similar low, mounding size. Yuki Snowflake® carries white flowers, while Yuki Cherry Blossom® carries pink. Planting both together gives a mixed pink-and-white spring edging.
