'Arnold Promise' is the standard by which hybrid witch hazels are measured, and it earned that position by blooming late enough to avoid the worst of winter and heavily enough to be visible from a distance. The flowers are strange and worth looking at closely — four narrow crinkled petals per bloom, uncurling like ribbon from a small red-brown calyx, clustered thickly along bare branches. On a cold day they roll up tight; on a mild one they open again. The fragrance is clean and lightly spicy, and it carries surprisingly well in cold air.
The habit matters as much as the flowers. This is a large multi-stemmed shrub that builds a broad vase-shaped frame, ultimately twelve to fifteen feet in both directions. Given room, it becomes the anchor of a border rather than a component of one. Given a tight spot, it will outgrow the space — so site it where the mature width is welcome.
Fall is the second show. The large rounded leaves turn a clear yellow shot through with orange, holding for a good stretch before dropping to expose the flower buds already set for winter. Between the two displays you get a clean, well-behaved green shrub that asks for almost nothing.
Plant it where you walk in winter — beside a front path, near a driveway, outside a window you look through in February. A witch hazel at the back of the property is a witch hazel you will never actually notice blooming.

Soil should be moist, well drained, and on the acidic side of neutral. Witch hazel dislikes both drought and standing water, and it will not thrive in heavy alkaline clay. Amend with organic matter at planting and mulch to keep the root zone cool and even.
Water regularly through the first several seasons — establishment is slow, and the plant is less drought-tolerant while young than its mature toughness suggests. Established specimens handle normal summer dry spells.
Feed lightly in early spring if growth is weak. A single application of a slow release fertilizer is enough for the year.
Prune immediately after flowering, in early spring. Buds for the following winter form during the summer, so late-season pruning removes the bloom. Most plants need only the removal of crossing or damaged branches; resist shaping it into a ball, since the vase form is the point.
Watch the base for suckers. Hybrid witch hazels are usually grafted onto a species rootstock, and any shoot arising below the graft union should be cut off flush as soon as it appears — left alone, rootstock growth will eventually overtake the named variety.
