Summary
Summer Cascade™ Wisteria is a breakthrough that puts wisteria within reach for gardeners in cold climates who assumed they could never grow one. Developed by the University of Minnesota from a hardy strain of Kentucky wisteria found growing in a White Bear Lake, Minnesota backyard, it reliably blooms in zone 4 — where Asian and even standard American wisterias would struggle or fail.
In early summer, long, showy racemes of fragrant lavender flowers with powder blue overtones cascade from the vine’s branches, creating the romantic curtain of bloom that makes wisteria one of the most coveted garden plants in the world. Because it blooms on new wood, Summer Cascade™ flowers even after harsh winters or heavy pruning. In favorable conditions, it may rebloom up to three times per season.
The pinnately compound foliage emerges with an attractive coppery-bronze tint in spring, matures to green through summer, and turns yellow in fall. Interesting seed pods develop after flowering and persist into winter, adding multi-season texture. This is a vigorous vine that can grow up to 10 feet of new cane in a single summer once established, so a sturdy support structure is essential.
Care
Summer Cascade™ Wisteria Care
Plant in full sun — Summer Cascade™ requires at least 6 hours of direct sun daily for the best flowering. It adapts to most soil types and is not particular about pH. Moist, well-drained soils are preferred, but the vine tolerates average conditions and urban pollution. Provide a sturdy pergola, arbor, or trellis that can support the significant weight of the mature vine’s woody structure.
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, the vine handles average moisture conditions but should not sit in standing water. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and promote rebloom, and again in late winter to reduce the previous season’s growth. Routine pruning several times throughout the growing season restrains size and encourages flower bud formation.
In exposed locations or colder microclimates within zone 4, apply a thick layer of mulch around the root zone in fall for additional winter protection.

Additional Information
What is the botanical name of Summer Cascade™ Wisteria?
The botanical name is Wisteria macrostachya ‘Betty Matthews’. It is a First Editions® selection from the University of Minnesota’s woody landscape plant breeding program. Kentucky wisteria (W. macrostachya) is closely related to American wisteria (W. frutescens) and is sometimes classified as a variety of it.
Is Summer Cascade™ a native plant?
Summer Cascade™ is a nativar — a cultivar selected from the native species Wisteria macrostachya (Kentucky wisteria), which is indigenous to the south-central United States. It is the non-invasive native alternative to the destructive Chinese and Japanese wisterias. Browse our Native Plants of North America collection for more native options.
Why is Summer Cascade™ the best wisteria for cold climates?
Summer Cascade™ was bred from a strain of Kentucky wisteria that survived and bloomed in zone 4 Minnesota for decades. No other wisteria has been proven to reliably flower at that level of cold hardiness. It also blooms on new wood, so even if winter kills the above-ground growth, the vine regrows and flowers the same season. Explore our Flowering Vines & Climbing Plants collection for more options.
