Summary
A weigela that doesn't quit after spring.
Most weigelas put on one big show in late spring and then settle into plain green for the rest of the year. Sonic Bloom® Pure Pink starts the same way, covering itself in big, trumpet-shaped flowers in a clear, true pink, but after a short rest it keeps going, pushing out fresh waves of blooms through summer and into fall until frost.
Hummingbirds are frequent visitors to the tubular flowers, and bees and butterflies work them as well, so the shrub stays busy with activity across the whole season. Deer, on the other hand, tend to leave it alone.
The plant grows quickly into a full, bushy, upright shrub about three to five feet tall and wide, with a slightly narrower footprint than many weigelas. That size and steady rebloom make it a strong choice for a flowering hedge, a backdrop to perennial beds, or a sunny foundation planting where you want color well past spring.
It is adaptable to most garden soils that drain well and blooms most heavily in full sun.
Care
Sonic Bloom® Pure Pink Weigela Care
Plant in full sun for the most flowers and the densest growth. It will grow in light shade, but bloom is noticeably lighter there.
Weigela adapts to most soils, including clay, as long as water does not stand around the roots. Work some compost into the planting hole in very poor soil, and add a two-to-three-inch layer of mulch to hold moisture and keep roots cool.
Water deeply once or twice a week through the first growing season while roots establish. Established plants handle average rainfall well but bloom best with water during long dry spells.
Feeding needs are light. An application of a slow release fertilizer in early spring is plenty, and plants in good soil may need none.
It keeps its shape naturally and does not need shearing. If you want to trim it, do so right after the first spring flush of flowers so it has time to push new growth for rebloom. Every three to five years, remove a few of the oldest, thickest stems at the base to keep the plant vigorous and full of flowers.

Additional Information
What is the botanical name of Sonic Bloom® Pure Pink Weigela?
The botanical name is Weigela florida Sonic Bloom® Pure Pink ‘SMNWFRP’. It is a Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrub in the reblooming Sonic Bloom® series.
What are some common names for this plant?
It is most often called weigela, and the species is also known as old-fashioned weigela.
How is it different from a traditional weigela?
Traditional weigelas bloom once, in late spring. Sonic Bloom® Pure Pink blooms at the same time, then reblooms in waves through summer and fall. It also has a slightly narrower, more upright habit than many older weigelas, so it fits into tighter spaces. For more flowering shrubs, browse our Shrubs & Bushes.
Is Sonic Bloom® Pure Pink Weigela deer resistant?
Yes. Deer tend to pass weigela by in favor of other plants, though no shrub is completely deer proof, and hungry deer may browse new growth in a hard winter. For more options, see our Deer-Resistant Shrubs and Evergreens.
