Sporobolus heterolepis
Overview
Uses: Border edging, prairie and meadow plantings, mass plantings and drifts, formal repeated plantings, slope stabilization, low-water gardens.
Benefits: The finest texture of any hardy native grass, forming a perfectly symmetrical fountain of thread-like blades that suits formal planting as readily as a meadow. Flowers carry a distinctive warm fragrance in late summer, and fall color runs clear gold with orange tones. Long-lived enough that a good planting outlasts most of the bed around it.

Summary
Prairie Dropseed is the grass that converts people who thought they did not like grasses. Blades not much thicker than thread build into a fountain so even it looks placed, and a row of them along a walk gives the kind of quiet repetition that makes a planting feel designed rather than assembled.
In late summer, flower stems rise a foot above the foliage carrying open, airy panicles tinted pink and bronze — and giving off a scent that people variously describe as coriander, buttered popcorn, or warm cilantro. It is unmistakable on a still evening and it is one of the few grasses with any fragrance at all. Autumn turns the whole clump clear gold with orange lights, holding pale straw through winter.
It is slow. A one-season plant looks unremarkable, and it takes three or four years to build the full fountain. What you get in exchange is longevity — established clumps sit in the same spot for decades without running, seeding around, or needing division, and they ask for essentially nothing once their deep roots are down.
Care
Prairie Dropseed Care
Plant Prairie Dropseed in full sun in well-drained soil. It is unfussy about fertility and handles clay, loam, sand, and rocky ground, but it needs sun and it needs drainage — shade produces a floppy, sparse plant and wet winter soil will kill it.
Water through the first growing season while roots go down. After establishment it is genuinely drought tolerant and rarely needs supplemental water in an average summer.
Do not fertilize established plantings. Rich soil produces lax growth that opens at the center. If a new planting on subsoil or fill is struggling, one light spring application of slow release fertilizer in the first year is enough.
Leave clumps standing through winter for structure and wildlife, then cut back to three or four inches in early spring before growth resumes. Division is almost never needed and is best avoided — plants resent disturbance and are slow to recover.

Additional Information
What does Prairie Dropseed smell like?
The flowers carry a warm, distinctive scent in late summer that is most often compared to coriander, buttered popcorn, or cilantro. Reactions vary — most people find it pleasant and a few do not — but it is noticeable from several feet away on a still evening.
Why is it called Dropseed?
The ripe seeds fall cleanly from their hulls and drop to the ground, rather than staying attached the way most grass seed does. The genus name Sporobolus means "seed thrower."
How long does it take to look established?
Three to four years for the full fountain shape. It is one of the slower native grasses to size up, which is why it is best planted in drifts at close spacing rather than as scattered single plants.
Is it deer resistant and drought tolerant?
Both. Deer browse it very rarely, and its deep root system carries it through dry summers without supplemental water. See our Deer-Resistant Perennials and Grasses collection for plants that pair with it in unfenced beds.
Is Prairie Dropseed native?
Yes, it is a straight species native to the tallgrass prairie across central and eastern North America. Browse our Native Plants of North America collection for companion prairie plants.
