Summary
The rhododendron that opens the season while the rest of the garden is still waking up.
Pioneer Silvery Pink is one of the earliest rhododendrons to flower. In very early spring, often before the surrounding shrubs have leafed out, soft silvery-pink blooms open all along its branches. Against a still-brown yard the effect is bright and a little unexpected, and it is the kind of plant people notice from the street.
It grows upright and fairly open, about four to six feet tall and only three to four feet wide. That narrow footprint lets it slip into spaces a broad, mounding rhododendron would overwhelm: a corner by the front steps, a gap between taller shrubs, or the back of a border where its early color shows over plants that have not started yet.
The small leaves are semi-evergreen. In milder winters many of them stay on the plant; after a hard winter it drops most of its foliage and looks more like a deciduous shrub until fresh leaves come in after the flowers.
Care
Pioneer Silvery Pink Rhododendron Care
Plant in full sun to partial shade. Because it flowers so early, siting matters: avoid low frost pockets where cold air settles, and avoid hot south-facing walls that can push buds open during a brief warm spell. An east-facing spot or a site with morning sun and some afternoon shade is ideal.
Like other rhododendrons it needs acidic, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. The fine, shallow roots dislike standing water, so amend heavy clay well or plant slightly high, with the top of the root ball even with or a little above the soil surface.
Water deeply once or twice a week during the first growing season and through dry spells afterward. A two-to-three-inch mulch of shredded bark or pine needles keeps the root zone cool and moist; keep it pulled back a few inches from the stems.
Feed lightly, if at all, with a slow release fertilizer after flowering. Rhododendrons are light feeders.
Do any pruning right after bloom, since flower buds for the following spring form over summer. Its naturally open, upright shape rarely needs more than a light shaping cut.
Size
What Size is the Pioneer Silvery Pink Rhododendron for Sale Online?
Our Pioneer Silvery Pink Rhododendron ships in a greenhouse-grade grow pot and is appropriately sized for its container at the time of shipment. Because it is semi-evergreen, plants shipped in the colder months may arrive with few leaves; this is normal and new foliage follows the spring flowers. If you have specific sizing or planting questions, please contact us.
How Large Does Pioneer Silvery Pink Rhododendron Grow?
Expect about 4 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide at maturity, in an upright, somewhat open shape. Space plants about 3 to 4 feet apart in a group or row.
Additional Information
Why does it drop some of its leaves in winter?
Pioneer Silvery Pink is semi-evergreen. How many leaves it keeps depends on the winter: in a mild year much of the foliage stays on, while a cold, windy winter strips most of it. Either way the flower buds come through, and the plant releafs after blooming. It is not a sign that anything is wrong.
What happens if a late frost hits the flowers?
Very early bloomers take that risk in some years. A hard freeze after the flowers open can brown the open blooms, though buds that have not yet opened often go on to flower normally, and the plant itself is not harmed. Planting out of frost pockets and away from warm walls makes a frost-damaged show less likely.
What does it pair well with?
Because it blooms so early, it works well as the first act in a planting of later-flowering shrubs. Combine it with evergreen and deciduous azaleas that follow a few weeks behind to stretch spring color across two months. Browse our Azaleas for companions.
Do deer eat it?
Deer do browse rhododendrons, including the buds and leaves of this one, especially in late winter. In yards with frequent deer traffic, plan on fencing or repellents. If deer pressure is heavy, our Deer-Resistant Shrubs and Evergreens are a safer choice.
