Summary
A tough, low-maintenance ground cover with striking blooms!
Liriope muscari 'Big Blue'—commonly known as Big Blue Lily Turf, and Monkey Grass 'Big Blue'—is a hardy, evergreen perennial that forms dense clumps of narrow, arching, dark green foliage. In late summer, it produces upright spikes of lavender flowers, resembling grape hyacinths. These flowers later give way to small, black berries, which persist into winter, adding seasonal interest.
This versatile and adaptable plant is highly tolerant of various soil conditions, including clay and sandy soils. It thrives in full sun to shade and is excellent for ground cover, borders, erosion control, and mass plantings.
Once established, Big Blue Lily Turf is drought-tolerant, resistant to deer and rabbits, and requires minimal upkeep, making it a long-lasting addition to any garden.
Care
Big Blue Lily Turf Care
Provide full sun to part shade for best growth. While it tolerates full shade, flowering may be reduced, and the foliage may become more elongated.
Plant in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It is adaptable to various soil types, including clay and sandy soils, and tolerates urban pollution well.
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once mature, Big Blue Lily Turf is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells.
Fertilization is optional but can enhance growth. Apply a slow-release fertilizer in early spring for best results. Our slow release fertilizer is a great option.
Minimal pruning is required. Trim back old foliage in early spring before new growth emerges to refresh the plant and encourage a cleaner appearance.
Space 12" to 18" apart for proper air circulation and to allow the plants to fill in naturally.
