Summary
Golden Tower™ Elderberry brings something genuinely uncommon to the landscape: brilliant gold lacy foliage on a strongly columnar shrub that stays just three to four feet wide while reaching six to ten feet tall. The combination of bright color, fine texture, and narrow form gives this plant a vertical presence that is hard to replicate.
The deeply cut, almost ferny leaves emerge with a chartreuse flush in spring before deepening into clear gold through summer. The color holds best in full sun; in partial shade the foliage tends toward chartreuse-green and the columnar habit may loosen slightly. In early summer, flat-topped clusters of small creamy white flowers appear at the branch tips, followed by dark purple-black berries in fall that feed songbirds and extend the seasonal show.
The narrow footprint sets Golden Tower™ apart from other ornamental elderberries like Black Lace® and Lemony Lace®, which spread to equal or greater width. At three to four feet wide, it fits along fence lines, in side yards, between windows, and anywhere a vertical exclamation point is needed without sacrificing planting space.
Care
Golden Tower™ Elderberry Care
Plant Golden Tower™ in full sun for the brightest gold foliage color. Partial shade is tolerated but will produce a more chartreuse-green tone and a slightly looser habit. This elderberry adapts to a wide range of soil types and prefers moist, humus-rich, well-drained conditions. It tolerates occasional wet soils and moderate drought once established.
Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, maintain consistent moisture for best foliage performance — golden-leaved plants can scorch in hot, dry conditions. A layer of organic mulch helps retain moisture and moderate root temperature. A spring application of slow release fertilizer supports vigorous growth and strong color.
Golden Tower™ can be pruned hard in late winter or early spring to maintain dense foliage and a tight columnar form. Left unpruned, the plant may develop a more open habit over time. Elderberries bloom on new wood, so spring pruning does not sacrifice flowers. For consistent berry production, plant a different Sambucus nigra cultivar within 50 feet to ensure cross-pollination.

How Large Does Golden Tower™ Elderberry Grow?

Additional Information
What makes Golden Tower™ different from other gold-leaf elderberries?
Golden Tower™ shares the bright golden foliage of varieties like Lemony Lace® and Sutherland Gold but grows in a distinctly columnar, upright form rather than spreading. This narrow habit makes it suited to tight spaces and vertical accents where a wider shrub would not fit. Browse our Shrubs & Bushes collection for more shrub options.
Is Golden Tower™ Elderberry deer resistant?
Yes. Elderberries are generally unpalatable to deer and Golden Tower™ is considered deer resistant. It is a reliable option for landscapes with browsing pressure. Browse our Deer-Resistant Shrubs and Evergreens collection for more options.
Are the berries edible?
The berries of Sambucus nigra are edible when properly cooked but should not be consumed raw, as uncooked elderberries and other plant parts contain compounds that can cause digestive upset. In the landscape, the berries serve primarily as a food source for songbirds. For maximum berry production, plant a compatible pollinator variety within 50 feet.
Does Golden Tower™ need to be pruned?
Annual hard pruning in late winter or early spring is recommended to promote dense, vigorous foliage and maintain the compact columnar form. Without pruning, the plant may develop a more open, looser habit over time. Elderberry blooms on new wood, so spring pruning does not sacrifice flowers.
