Summary
Dandy Man® Purple Rhododendron opens the door to growing rhododendrons in regions where cold winters have traditionally made them unreliable. Developed by Joe Parks, who dedicated his career to breeding rhododendrons tough enough for New England, this hybrid has proven itself hardy in Maine and New Hampshire while also tolerating the heat and humidity of warmer zones.
In spring, large clusters of tubular, bell-shaped purple flowers with subtle orange-speckled eyes cover the branches in a lavish display that draws bees, butterflies, and admiring glances in equal measure. The blooms are carried against dense, dark green evergreen foliage that stays lush and attractive through every season — including winter, when most deciduous shrubs offer only bare branches.
Beyond its ornamental qualities, Dandy Man® Purple carries genes from Rhododendron pseudochrysanthum that give it an unusually high level of Phytophthora resistance. This root rot disease is the most common cause of rhododendron failure, and this selection’s built-in resistance makes it significantly more forgiving in garden conditions than many traditional varieties.
Care
Dandy Man® Purple Rhododendron Care
Plant in partial shade for best foliage quality, or in full sun in cooler northern zones. In warmer climates (zone 7–8), afternoon shade is beneficial to prevent leaf scorch. Dandy Man® Purple requires moist, well-drained, acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Avoid alkaline soils and poorly drained sites.
Maintain a 2 to 3 inch layer of shredded bark mulch or pine straw over the root zone at all times to keep the shallow roots cool and moist. Water consistently, especially during dry periods — rhododendrons should never dry out completely. Fertilize in spring with a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants. A light application of slow release fertilizer is sufficient; avoid overfertilizing.
Pruning is minimal. Trim lightly after flowering if needed to maintain shape. Rhododendrons bloom on old wood, so avoid pruning in fall or winter. Plant in a location sheltered from harsh winter winds to prevent foliage desiccation in colder zones.
