Summary
Few shrubs deliver the kind of instant visual impact that Czechmark Trilogy® Weigela manages with its remarkable three-color bloom. Clusters of funnel-shaped flowers open white, shift to pink, and deepen to red as they mature — and because the blooms open gradually, all three colors appear on the plant at once for a display that lasts up to six weeks.
The glossy, apple-green foliage provides a clean backdrop through the growing season, complementing the multicolor floral show and giving the plant year-round garden presence even after the blooms fade. Butterflies and hummingbirds are drawn to the nectar-rich tubular flowers, adding movement and life to the planting.
Developed in the Czech Republic and selected for superior flower set and crisp, true colors, Czechmark Trilogy® is an improved version of the popular ‘Carnaval’ weigela. Its compact 3 to 3.5 foot stature makes it well suited to foundation beds, low borders, and container plantings where a larger weigela would overwhelm the space.
Care
Czechmark Trilogy® Weigela Care
Plant in full sun for the heaviest bloom set and brightest colors. Some afternoon shade is tolerated in hotter climates but may reduce flowering. Czechmark Trilogy® adapts to most well-drained soil types and is not particular about soil pH.
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, this weigela handles average garden conditions with modest moisture needs. Fertilize in early spring with a slow release fertilizer if desired. Avoid fertilizing after midsummer, as late feeding can produce tender growth susceptible to winter damage.
Czechmark Trilogy® blooms on old wood. If pruning is needed for size or shape, do so immediately after flowering finishes. Every three to five years, remove a few of the oldest stems at the base to encourage vigorous young growth. Note that weigela is one of the last shrubs to leaf out in spring — be patient if it appears slow to wake up.
