Summary

Monarda 'Gardenview Scarlet'—commonly referred to as Bee Balm Gardenview Scarlet, or Gardenview Scarlet Bee Balm—is a stunning flowering perennial that produces some of the most vibrant, red blooms that we've ever seen on a Monarda

Bright, vivid green leaves tastefully compliment the boldness of the flowers. Additionally, the leaves have culinary significance, and are frequently used in salads and teas!

Although many cultivars of Monarda are prone to powdery mildew, 'Gardenview Select' is unusually resistant to it.

The flower stems are known to remain erect after their blooms subside, which often allows the seeds at the center of the flower to dry, providing a source of food for birds.

Grows vigorously in a clumping pattern, so much so that we suggest dividing every three years.

Is known to tolerate clay soils, deer, and rabbits.

Care

Bee Balm Care

Monarda 'Gardenview Scarlet' is known to be very low maintenance and requires minimum care.

Propagation is best accomplished through division once the base of the flowers begin to crowd. This typically happens after about 3 years of growth. We suggest doing such division in the early spring.

Fertilizations will accelerate growth and keep your plant well fed. We suggest using our slow release fertilizer, or something similar.

Monarda 'Gardenview Scarlet' prefers full sun, but it also does well in areas of partial shade.

Water regularly after planting until established, or in periods of drought. Monarda 'Gardenview Scarlet' is not considered drought tolerant and should ideally be grown in moist soil.

Is known to tolerate a variety of poor soil conditions, including heavy clay, as long as the soil is moist.

Although more resistant to powdery mildew than many other types of Monarda, it's suggested to thin dense plants via pruning if grown in humid environments. This will allow greater airflow throughout the plant, thereby discouraging fungal growth.

Removing spent flowers after blooming is finished will keep your plant looking well-maintained and will also promote additional blooms. Leaving spent flowers erect will allow birds access to their seeds.

It's suggested to cut back your Monarda 'Gardenview Scarlet' to a few inches above ground level in the late winter, prior to any new season growth.
