Novelty Poinsettias

Novelty poinsettias are specialty cultivars selected for distinctive bract color, patterning, or form beyond traditional red varieties. These plants are often grown as seasonal decorative crops during the winter holiday period.

Their appeal lies in unique visual characteristics that make them stand out in indoor displays and seasonal arrangements.

Standard poinsettias are typically solid red, white, or pink, while novelty varieties may feature marbling, speckling, variegation, or unusual color blends. These traits are developed through selective breeding and cultivar selection.

Although care requirements are generally similar, novelty types are often grown in smaller production quantities due to their specialized nature.

Poinsettias are traditionally produced for late fall and early winter sales, aligning with the holiday season. They are not typically available year-round due to their production cycle and light-sensitive flowering requirements.

Commercial growers begin production months in advance to ensure plants reach peak color during the holiday window.

Poinsettias perform best in bright, indirect light with consistent room temperatures and moderate watering. Soil should be allowed to dry slightly between waterings, avoiding prolonged saturation.

Drafts, cold exposure, and overwatering are common causes of decline during the indoor display period.

Poinsettias are technically perennial in warm climates, but they are most commonly grown as seasonal indoor decorative plants in cooler regions. Reblooming them requires careful light control and timing.

Because of their specific photoperiod requirements, many gardeners choose to enjoy them as single-season display plants.
