Summary
Chlorophytum comosum 'Irish'—commonly referred to as Spider Plant—is a beautiful and popular houseplant that's also very adaptable, low-maintenance and easy to grow.
It gets its name from the small, spider-like trailing plants that it produces in order to reproduce and spread. They dangle off mother plants, and mildly resemble spiders on a web. These spider-like plants are often known as "spiderettes" or "pups", and are typically formed during periods of short days and long nights.
This particular cultivar, 'Irish', is known for its shorter and broader than average foliage and unique reverse pattern of variegation.
Spider Plant is particularly effective at air purification. It's known to remove dangerous toxins such as carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, xylene, benzene, and other VOCs.
Great for hanging baskets!
Drought tolerant.
Care
Spider Plant Care
Thrives in bright indirect sun and partially shaded areas. Avoid exposure to full, strong sun as it may cause leaf burn.
Chlorophytum comosum 'Irish' may be grown as an outdoor plant in tropical zones 9 - 11.
Prefers soil full of rich, organic compounds. Avoid soil with poor drainage as root rot may likely occur if planted in such.
Attempt to keep soil slightly moist but not wet between spring and fall. Water less over winter.
This plant does best in moderate temperatures between 60°F and 85°F. Avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures below 50°F.
We suggest fertilizing from spring through fall. Our slow release fertilizer is a great option. Apply fertilizer at 1/2 strength and do not overfertilize.
Does best when slightly rootbound.
