Styrax japonicus—commonly called Japanese Snowbell, and Snowflake Flower Tree—is a semi-compact deciduous flowering tree. It's best known for its bushy growth, strong horizontal branching, clusters of fragrant white flowers, and rounded crown.

Considered a shade tree by some, Japanese Snowbell is known to cast a light shade that's cooling but not heavy enough to prevent grass from growing underneath it.

Bunches of 3/4", waxy, 5-petaled, white flowers are prominent from May through June! The hanging habit of the flower clusters opposed to the erect posture of the foliage ensures attention grabbing visibility.

Olive green foliage typically turns attractive shades of yellow and red in autumn.

Established branches typically expose an attractive, orange under-bark in the winter, providing visual interest.

The wood of Japanese Snowbell is extremely hard, and has traditionally been used in the manufacture of umbrellas and prayer beads.

The perfect tree for along a path, as a border, or near a patio!

No serious insect or disease problems.

Japanese Snowbell Care

Provide full sun or partial sun. Too little light will cause growth issues.

Fertilization is suggested, especially if soil is poor. Our slow release fertilizer is a great option. We suggest that fertilizations be applied in the spring.

Does best in soil that's moist, slightly acidic, and well draining. Does not thrive in dry soil!

Pruning and trimming is typically not required, although it may be done to promote desired shaping. Any heavy trimming should be done over the course of winter.

Water regularly, especially after planting prior to establishment. Attempt to keep soil moist, but not wet. It's suggested to place 2"-3" of mulch under this plant to help retain a light degree of ground moisture and to prevent the growth of weeds around the base.
