Chrysanthemum × morifolium—often referred to as Fall Mums, Garden Mums, Hardy Mums, and Autumn Mums—is a semi-compact perennial that's best known for its abundant fall flowers! Extremely popular as a seasonal potted plant throughout autumn!

Fall Mums add a splash of seasonal color to any outdoor space. Boasting low-maintenance care requirements, they can brighten up patios, porches, and gardens with ease. With a wide range of hues available, Fall Mums are an ideal way to infuse your space with vibrant colors!

Although often grown as an annual, Garden Mums are able to be grown as perennials throughout most of the United States.

Fall Mum Care

If planting outside as a perennial, it's very important to protect the roots from freezing! Many people plant their outdoor mums too late in the season, preventing the roots from having enough time to establish themselves prior to heavy freezes. We suggest planting any outdoor mums prior to mid-October to help avoid this issue.

Trim off Mum flowers after first hard frost, but leave stems intact. Cover base of mum with 4"+ of mulch to help protect roots from hard freezes (work mulch into stems while doing so). Remove stems (near base) and excess mulch in the spring.

Plant Garden Mums in full sun.

Fertilize as required, especially if planted in poor soil.

Keep their soil moist, but not wet. Irrigate during establishment, and during periods of drought.

May require some support (such as netting) when flowering, especially in areas prone to high winds and heavy rains.

Indoor Fall Mums do best when kept in cooler, sunny areas of a home.
