Care
Japanese Andromeda Care
It's best to provide full or partial sun, depending on the climate. Although this shrub is considered to be shade tolerant in warmer hardiness zones, too much shade will cause adverse growth issues.
This Ericaceous plant is best grown in a low pH media with good drainage.
As a broadleaf evergreen, protection from winter winds is recommended in lower hardiness zones.
Afternoon shade is recommended when planted in southern regions.
Fertilization is suggested, especially if soil is poor. Our slow release fertilizer is a great option. Use caution and do not overfertilize. We suggest using 1/2 of the suggested amount of fertilizer for this shrub as its nutrients needs aren't as high as others.
It's suggested to prune after spring flowering cycle. Interstella pieris blooms on old wood, do not prune after first of June so plant can set flower buds for following spring.
Water often after planting prior to establishment. Attempt to keep soil lightly moist, but not wet. It's suggested to place 2"-3" of mulch under this plant to help retain ground moisture.
