This variety of arborvitae is characterized by its dense, thick, and vibrant evergreen foliage, which remains visually appealing throughout the year. It also boasts an impressive growth rate, exceeding 2 feet per year, combining the compact form of the Emerald Green arborvitae with the rapid growth of the 'Green Giant' variety!
Notable for its taller, faster, and slightly wider growth compared to the North Pole® Arborvitae, the 'American Pillar' maintains a relatively narrow width, making it an excellent choice for maximizing space even as it matures. This characteristic ensures that it won't occupy too much space while still providing effective privacy.
A significant advantage of the 'American Pillar' is its low maintenance; it maintains its shape without the need for pruning, saving time and effort in garden upkeep. Additionally, it is recognized for its hardiness and durability in various landscape settings, making it a reliable choice for different environments.
The 'American Pillar' arborvitae is native to North America, adding to its adaptability and ease of growth in many North American gardens. For those using it for privacy purposes, it is recommended to plant these trees about 2.5 feet apart to create an effective and aesthetically pleasing privacy barrier.
Care
Arborvitae Care
Provide full sun to partial shade. Too much shade will cause growth issues.
Fertilization is suggested, especially if soil is poor. Our slow release fertilizer is a great option. Fertilize in spring.
Naturally grows as a tight, tall, and narrow shrub. New growth may be trimmed to shape in late spring, following plant’s natural habit. Keep well-watered after trimming to prevent browning of edges. Do not cut too hard or cut into thick stems, which will result in slow recovery.
Water regularly, especially after planting prior to establishment. Attempt to keep soil moist but not wet. Once established, 'American Pillar' is able to tolerate a degree of dry soil.
Mulching around the base will help to trap ground moisture.
This arborvitae prefers soil that is well draining.
Space 2.5' apart at a minimum.
