This shrub packs the same dramatic punch as traditional smokebushes but in a smaller footprint—perfect for urban landscapes, patio gardens, or as a colorful foundation accent. Unlike larger varieties, Velveteeny™ stays neat and rounded without heavy pruning.

Care

Velveteeny™ Smokebush Care

Plant in full sun for the deepest foliage color and most abundant flowering. While it tolerates some light shade, performance is best with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Soil should be well-draining. This plant is adaptable to a range of soil types, including poor or rocky soils, and doesn’t mind occasional dryness once established.

Water regularly during the first growing season. After establishment, Velveteeny™ is drought-tolerant, but it will benefit from deep watering during extended dry spells.

Fertilization is rarely needed, but you may apply a slow-release balanced fertilizer in spring if growth appears sluggish. Our slow release fertilizer is a great option.

Pruning is optional. The naturally compact shape usually needs no shaping, but you can trim lightly in late winter or early spring if desired.
