Summary
A vibrant, low-maintenance ground cover that brightens up any shaded space!
Liriope muscari 'Variegata'—commonly called variegated lily turf—is a tough, evergreen perennial known for its eye-catching, cream-striped leaves and arching, fountain-like growth habit. Unlike traditional green liriope, its variegated foliage offers year-round visual interest, bringing brightness to dark garden corners and mixed plantings.
In mid to late summer, delicate spikes of lavender-purple flowers rise above the foliage, adding a subtle pop of color before transitioning to small, black berries in the fall. This versatile and durable plant is perfect for areas where grass struggles, offering a dense, weed-suppressing ground cover that thrives with little effort.
Well-suited for borders, rock gardens, foundation plantings, and erosion control, variegated lily turf holds its color through the seasons, standing out against darker greens in the landscape.
Care
Variegated Liriope Care
Provide full sun to part shade for best performance. It grows well in shaded areas, but for brighter foliage and stronger blooms, partial sun is ideal.
Plant in moist, well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. It adapts well to clay, loamy, or sandy soils and tolerates urban pollution and compacted areas.
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Once mature, variegated lily turf becomes drought-resistant, though occasional watering in dry periods will keep it looking lush.
Fertilization is optional but can boost growth and flowering. Apply a slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy foliage and blooms. Our slow release fertilizer is a great option.
Minimal pruning is needed. Cut back old foliage in early spring before new growth emerges to maintain a clean, uniform appearance.
Space 12" to 18" apart to allow the plants to spread and form a dense, decorative ground cover over time.
