Summary
Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens'—commonly called Black Mondo Grass—is special due to the fact that it's the only dwarf ornamental black grass in existence.
An evergreen, it's known to maintain its striking deep purplish black color all year long assuming that temperatures don't fall to far. This grass may brown in cold winter temperatures.
Black Mondo Grass produces beautiful, small, dark lavender flowers throughout the summer. These flowers produce purple berries in the fall.
Its striking, dark foliage makes it especially well suited for accenting a wide variety of locations. Try it for borders, massed together in a bed, or as a contrast piece. Perfect for pots and patios.
Pest and disease resistant. Drought tolerant once established.
Care
Black Mondo Grass Care
Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' is extremely low maintenance and easy to care for.
Fertilizations will accelerate growth and keep your plant well fed. We suggest using our slow release fertilizer, or something similar.
Black Mondo Grass may be grown in partial sun, although full sun is typically slightly better. Conversely, exposure to extremely strong summer sun may dull this plants appearance.
Water regularly after planting until established, or in periods of drought. Although this plant is considered drought tolerant, its ideal soil is moist, rich, and well draining.
If growing as a perennial in areas that receive frost, it's suggested to cut back this grass in late fall. Leave at least 2" of foliage when cutting back.
May be dug out and overwintered in colder zones (zones 4 and colder).
If growing as a perennial, we suggest propagating your Black Mondo Grass through division. This is best done in spring, and is accomplished by simply cutting the base of the plant and its roots into sections, and replanting those sections. Failure to divide and transplant every few years may result in situations of root bounding.
