Summary
A playful and sculptural bloomer that adds cheerful texture to any garden or bouquet.
Craspedia globosa, commonly called Billy Buttons or Drumstick Flower, is a sun-loving perennial native to Australia. It forms compact clumps of silvery-green, grassy foliage and sends up slender stems topped with bright yellow, golf-ball-shaped blooms. These globe-like flowers are long-lasting and perfect for cutting, drying, or just brightening up your borders.
Highly tolerant of drought and poor soils once established, this low-maintenance bloomer thrives in full sun and handles heat with ease. It's a go-to for adding vertical interest, whimsical texture, and pollinator appeal to any sunny garden space.
Care
Drumstick Flower Care
Plant in full sun for best flowering. Partial shade may reduce bloom production and lead to leggier growth.
Choose well-drained soil. Craspedia does not tolerate wet feet or overly heavy soils. If planting in containers, use a fast-draining potting mix.
Water regularly after planting, but reduce frequency once established. It is drought-tolerant and prefers to dry slightly between waterings.
Apply a light layer of slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. Our slow release fertilizer is a great option.
Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowering and maintain a clean appearance. In colder zones, treat as an annual or lift plants before frost.
Space plants 12" to 18" apart to allow airflow and room to spread.
