Prunus 'Kiku-Shidare-Zakura'—commonly referred to as the Pink Weeping Cherry Tree, Weeping Japanense Cherry Tree, Weeping Oriental Cherry, and sometimes as the Cheal's Weeping Cherry Tree—is an ornamental deciduous flowering tree that's famous for its weeping growth habit and profuse springtime blooms!
Branching is extremely visually attractive, cascading, and pendulous. Birds often love its branching for nestmaking.
After blooming, the branches become covered in luscious green foliage providing summer interest.
Blooms are double flowered and vary in color between shades of light and dark pinks.
Foliage turns yellow in autumn, and is often accented with hints of bronze.
Provide full sun or partial sun. Full sun is best, and will yield the heaviest blooms! Too little light will cause growth issues.
Fertilization is suggested, especially if soil is poor. Our slow release fertilizer is a great option. We recommend that fertilizations be applied in the spring.
Does best in soil that's moist, slightly acidic, and well draining. Does not thrive in dry soil, although established trees may tolerate dry soil conditions.
Lightly trim branches to keep them off of the ground. Heavier pruning and trimming is typically not required, although it may be done to promote desired shaping (such as a "mushroom" shape). Any heavy trimming should be done over the course of winter.
Water regularly, especially after planting prior to establishment. Attempt to keep soil moist, but not wet. It's suggested to place 2"-3" of mulch under this plant to help retain a light degree of ground moisture and to prevent the growth of weeds around the base.
The Prunus 'Kiku-Shidare-Zakura' that we sell online will ship in a greenhouse grade grow pot. Each plant will be appropriately sized for its pot. Please contact us with any specific questions.
Prunus 'Kiku-Shidare-Zakura' will often reach mature heights and widths of 10' - 15'.
Its botanical name is Prunus 'Kiku-Shidare-Zakura'. Synonymous botanical names include: Prunus chealii 'Pendula', and Prunus pendula.
Prunus 'Kiku-Shidare-Zakura' is considered toxic to both people and pets!
Its toxicity is a result of the fact that all parts of the plant, with the exception of its ripe fruit, contain cyanide. It should be noted that although the fruit itself doesn't contain cyanide, the seed inside the fruit does contain cyanide.
Signs of poisoning include trouble breathing, bright red gums and/or lips, shock, dilated pupils, nausea, and death.
Fall is for planting! Just planted our new weeping cherry, looking forward to seeing it bloom and grow next Spring!
Thanks for your business and review, Vic! We hope you love your new cherry tree!
I ordered a weeping cherry and was sort of concerned about the shape it would arrive in. Boy was I wrong. It came packed with love and she’s so happy in her new home in the Midwest. I’m a big fan and will order again.
Thanks for your review, Christine!
Received this tree packaged well about a month ago and it is doing really well. I cannot wait until the spring when we will hopefully get to see it bloom in pink! As for now, its a pretty weeping green tree but still looks great!
Thanks for your review, Heather!
